Frequently Asked Questions & Policies

A: The laser injects the skin with short pulsed intense laser beams. The beam passes through the skin and breaks up tattoo pigment particles of all colours and shades into smaller particles. The body’s immune system will then flush these pigments over time. Some people see fading/break up of the ink immediately after their treatment, two weeks post treatment, or after their second session. It all depends on how deep the ink was penetrated into the skin initially. Energy from the laser is harmless and will only target the pigmented skin, leaving the un-inked surrounding skin unharmed.
Laser tattoo removal uses technology in which a high-powered, short, pulsed beam of light is delivered at specific wavelengths—1064nm (nanometres), 650 nm, 585nm or 532nm.

A: A lot of people ask me if Laser Tattoo Removal hurts. For some it is uncomfortable and in certain spots it can be quite painful, however, it varies from person to person. Some people have higher pain tolerance than others and some areas of the body are more sensitive than other parts. I use an advanced skin cooling machine to help minimize discomfort during and after the laser removal treatment. It is a good idea to take Tyenol prior to treatment to help with some of the pain. DO NOT take Aspirin® products as they can increase the risk of bruising and/or bleeding.

A: Most tattoos can be drastically faded and most can be completely removed. Laser Tattoo Removal depends on the following factors:

Colour, quality, age and depth of pigment: Certain pigments such as black, red and dark blue respond better to the laser than orange, light blue, green, turquoise, aquamarine and pink pigments. Lighter pigments can require more treatments to achieve your desired results.

Professional tattoos use ink intended to be permanent and can require more treatments than amateur or medical tattoos. Most tattoos that were done before the year 2000 were used with less of a quality of ink, therefore, fewer treatments are needed.

Age of the tattoo: Older, blurred tattoos that have migrated from their original site can be more difficult to remove.

Location on the body: Tattoos on thinner skinned areas (such ankles, fingers & writsts) are more difficult to remove than those placed on thicker skinned areas (such as the abdomen and shoulders).

Some areas may retain a shadow of the former tattoo which will fade gradually, however it is not guaranteed. It is important to note that each tattoo is different and each person will have varying results. While some clients see immediate break-up and fading immediately following their initial treatment, some may see it after their 2nd or even 3rd treatment. The key to laser tattoo removal is patience and realistic expectations as well as an understanding that each person and their tattoo is different.

A: Essentially, the removal of a tattoo involves creating a controlled medical burn with the laser. There is an immediate whitening called “frosting” of the treated area, which may last anywhere from several minutes up to several hours. Short term side effects can include: swelling, redness, mild burning, temporary bruising and/or blistering.

Within 12-72 hours, your skin will likely scab or crust, and this can last for one to two weeks or more. Your skin can be pink or pale after the scab separates. Loss of skin pigment (Hypopigmentation/Hyperpigmentation) in the treated area is common, but usually temporary. I will discuss possible side effects with you and provide you with pre and post-treatment care instructions during your consultation before scheduling your laser tattoo removal appointment.

A: Laser tattoo removal can require anywhere from 3 to 15+ treatments. It is impossible to predict the exact number of laser tattoo removal sessions someone will require to fully remove their tattoo. The reason is that there are so many outlying factors involved: age of a tattoo, the colors involved, whether or not it was done by a pro artist, the tattoo’s proximity to the heart, and so on. Someone who has an all-black tattoo that’s 20+ years old and was inked by an amateur tattoo artist could be shocked to find they only need 2-3 sessions before their tattoo is completely gone. Ideally, treatments will be scheduled four to eight weeks apart depending on your skin type. These time frames will allow your body’s lymphatic system to flush out the shattered pigment particles.

A: Each session of laser tattoo removal varies. Most treatments will last no longer than 30 minutes start to finish. I recommend a consultation before your treatment so that we can cover the cost, process, aftercare and most importantly, answer any questions you may have. In your consultation I will assess your tattoo for the following characteristics: size, age, pigment colour, pigment type, pigment depth, design intricacy, and location on your body.

After your first treatment session, we will have a much better idea as to how long your individual sessions will last. Also, you will have a better understanding of what your pain tolerance is, of which will be dictated by the location of your tattoo.

A: Heavy sun exposure pre and post-treatment is not recommended. The area should be covered from UVA/UVB rays for approximately 4 weeks prior to and after each session. In most cases, 4 weeks post treatment is sufficient time to resume tanning as the healing is complete. However, if you are planning to remove your tattoo through a series of consecutive treatments, it is best not to expose the area until your treatment is finished. Sun exposure between treatments will pro-long your tattoo removal journey.

A: I price tattoo removal based on size. Most Tattoo removal treatments start at $99.00 (plus gst). Anything smaller or larger will require a quote which we will discuss in your consultation. You have the option to email me at info@renewlaserltd.com or text me at 604 710 0051 and provide a picture along with the details of your tattoo such as age, location, color(s), size, and indicate whether or not this is a professional or amateur tattoo.

A: There is no downtime with laser tattoo removal, however with cosmetic tattoos, I recommend not to wear make up, use lotions/creams or any products that contain perfumes or alcohol on the treated area for the first few days. Ensuring the area is clean, moisturized along with staying hydrated are highly recommended as your body will be working on removing the shattered ink particles via the lymphatic system.
