Age spots, or sun spots as they are sometimes called, are flat, oval areas of increased pigmentation that appear on the parts of your skin that are most exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders and arms. Although they are more common in adults over the age of 50 years, younger people may have them too; especially if they spend a lot of time in the sun. Other sources of ultraviolet light, such as tanning beds may also cause the appearance of age spots. Age spots are harmless and do not require treatment. However, for cosmetic reasons, you may want to have them removed. One of the most effective ways to remove age spots is with laser treatment. This form of treatment has several advantages when compared to other treatments for age spots.

Laser skin treatment makes you look younger

Age spots, as the name suggests, can cause you to look older than you are. Simply having them removed can shave years off appearance but another reason laser treatment makes you appear younger is that the laser helps tighten the skin by stimulating collagen production. When this happens, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles will diminish along with your age spots.

Laser skin treatment is safe

Sun spot removal is safe when performed by a certified laser specialist. You may still, however, experience side effects. The side effects you may experience are dependent on several factors including your skin type and the intensity of the procedure. Side effects might include, swelling, burning sensation, itching or stinging, mild redness, scabbing and peeling of the skin in the treated area. These side effects normally resolve on their own after a short period of time. More serious and long-term side effects, although rare, may include scarring, loss of pigment or darkening of the skin.

What to expect with laser skin treatments for age spot removal

The more intense your age spots are, the more treatments you will need. You will need to speak with a laser specialist to determine the number of treatment sessions that it will take to have your age spots removed. Each laser skin treatment session can take as little as 30 to 45 minutes for partial treatments while extensive treatments can last up to two hours.

What to do before laser treatment

Leading up to your laser skin treatment, you should avoid certain medication and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen or vitamin E, for at least 10 days before the procedure. These substances can affect blood clotting and cause increased bleeding and/or bruising. If you smoke, quit at least 2 weeks before your laser treatment to encourage better healing. Also, avoid excessive sun exposure and when you cannot avoid the sun, ensure you wear sunscreen.

Laser skin treatment aftercare

Following laser treatment, the treated area will be bandaged for a few days. After the bandages come off, your skin may be red or pink until your skin heals. This usually takes 10 to 14 days. Full recovery and rejuvenation will take about two or three months. While you wait for your skin to fully recover, you should use oil-free makeup, avoid sun exposure as much as possible and use sunscreen when you must be in the sun. You should keep your skin moisturized as well because dry skin could result in a blistering and painful tightening of the skin.
